Commander Halverson is a native of St. Francis, Minnesota. He attended Aviation Officer Candidate School through the Naval Aviation Cadet (NAVCAD) Program. Upon completion of flight school in November 1988, he was commissioned and designated a naval aviator.
Upon completion of flight training, he was assigned to HS-10 to complete his H-3H Fleet Readiness Squadron (FRS) Training. Following completion of the FRS, he was assigned to HS-8 from July of 1989 to July 1993 where he completed one deployment and transitioned to the H-60F/H. During this tour he served as a Maintenance Branch Officer, Schedules Officer, and Assistant Operations Officer.
After his first tour, he was assigned to the Naval Reserve Officer Training (NROTC) Command at the University of San Diego. While stationed at NROTC he earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering from San Diego State University.
In 1996 he was assigned to the USS CONSTELLATION (CV 64) until 1998 where he served as a Catapult and Arresting Gear Officer and V-1 Division Officer.
In February 1998, he reported to the Warhawks of HS-10 as an FRS Instructor and Training Officer. Continuing his career at sea, he reported to the Golden Falcons of HS-2 for his Department Head tour as the Administrative Officer and the Operations Officer.
In October 2002, he reported to the Warhawks and began his second tour as an FRS Instructor and performed the duties of Training Officer. In May 2005, he was assigned to the USS RONALD REAGAN (CVN 76), where he served as the Safety Officer during her maiden deployment to the Arabian Gulf. Following this tour, he reported to the Warhawks of HS-10 in June 2007.
During this current tour aboard HS-10 he served as the Expeditionary Sea Combat Unit THREE (ESCU-3) Officer-In-Charge, and deployed to the Philippines in support of JTF-515 aboard the USNS GYSGT FRED W. STOCKHAM (T-AK-3017). After his return from his det's deployment, he was assigned as the FRS Maintenance Officer.
CDR Halverson has flown over 3,000 hours, and completed six deployments. His decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (5), Air Force Commendation Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, and other various personal and unit awards.
